1, 2, 3 John & Jude

Welcome to the first, second and third letter of John and the book of Jude. While indeed small in stature, they pack a powerful punch in terms of depth. The books of John were written by the apostle John who also wrote the gospel of John and the book of Revelation. Setting John apart from many New Testament writers is the timing of their authorship and style of writing.

John's writings were written during the second generation church. Not to be confused with the second century church. This is important when considering the style and content of John's writings. The main difference being that he did not have to spend a lot of time or effort "un-training" the minds of his readers. Unlike Paul or Peter, there was little need to debunk the Old Testament Jewish way of life that the Jews of the early church had grown accustomed to. Not having to retrain the recipients thinking, allowed John to delve head-long into his intended content of each writing.

The time period of his writing afforded John the luxury of speaking truth directly. Oftentimes his admonishments were extremely blunt and straight-forward. This, combined with the age of authorship, makes the writings of John powerful, effective and offensive. Powerful because of his eye witnesses testimonies and his divinely chosen participation making him privy to God's Revelations. Effective because of the very black and white style of teaching. Offensive because much of what he writes stabs a spiritual knife into our fleshly thinking and living.

The book of Jude was written by the half brother of Jesus. Jude was a late believer of Jesus having come to saving faith some time after Jesus' ascension. The main purpose for his writing was to expose false teachers and warn believers of false doctrine that had begun to creep into the first century church. His letter is vital reading for the Christian because of its encouraging content. Jude was a great combination of warning and edifying which makes his work a must read for every believer.
