Nehemiah
In the Hebrew Bible Ezra and Nehemiah are one book. Along with Esther, all are written in, during and about the same time period in Israel. At this time in Israel's history they are about half way into the 70 year captivity that Jeremiah had spoken of. Esther married the king of Persia, Ahasuerus (or Artexerxes), it was he, through the promptings no doubt by Esther, who gave Nehemiah the order to go back and begin rebuilding the wall. The queen usually has ways to persuade the king.
Nehemiah was cup bearer to the king, which by the way, not to confuse you too much , was also the same guy by the name of king Darius the Mede spoken of in Daniel. Zerubbabel returned with about 50,000 Jews. This was the first exodus out of captivity. Ezra led a second wave of captives back and Nehemiah came later.
The first 6 chapters cover the rebuilding of the wall and the remaining chapters cover the re-doctrination of the people. The wall was a very important piece for security and protection in those days. Babylon, we know, was said to have walls 380 feet thick and 100 feet high. Wall building is symbolic of restoration, whether it be an individual life, a relationship, a church, or a nation. This wall was to enclose the city of Jerusalem, the center of Zion; the holy city of God.
Nehemiah is comfortable in his position as governor in the citadel of Susa. But he hears a report and he is stirred in his spirit. Nehemiah’s progression to restoration starts with concern. When Nehemiah heard of the utter collapse and destitution of Jerusalem he wept and mourned. You will never rebuild the walls of your life until you have mourned over the ruins. He also fasted and prayed and in his prayer he confessed..
Nehemiah moves from concern to confession to commitment. From there he goes to the king. So we have concern, confession, commitment and now courage. Why courage? The governors of the lands around them were hostile, bent against everything that was of God; His will His way, His word. It takes courage to face the enemies of God, even though we know no weapon formed against us shall prosper. When we say we will build, the devil says he will tear down. When we say we will be strong the enemy says he will weaken. When we decide to go forward, the devil seeks to drag you back.
Christians are supposed to be street smart, we should not be naive to the things of the world. Nehemiah is one of the most street smart characters in the Bible. So he goes from concern to confession to commitment to courage, and now caution. He does not rush into the project. He surveys the land at night, he sets forth a plan, then he figures the best and most efficient way to the work. He sets the people to build on their section of the wall. This is genius. Even though Nehemiah may have had a plan and a way and the people, he also had something very important... passion and excitement.
While Nehemiah exhibited concern to confession to commitment, courage…caution. The devil has his list of C’s as well. Contempt, conspiracy and cunning in that order. But when God is on your side, amazing results are possible. They finished the wall in miraculous time, 52 days to be exact. When a wall or life has been rebuilt around the principles of God’s Word, around Christ, and in the HS, one must fortify and preserve the work. This is what Nehemiah does; well Ezra actually. They gather together, they read the Word, the make a covenant of obedience and then celebrate and remember the past working of God in their lives and then in chapter 11 the gifts of the people are put to use for the Lord.
The book closes with Nehemiah being zealous for the things of God. Fearlessly upholding the Word and house of God. uncompromising, he maintains the level of holiness and they go on to dedicate the wall. He then proceeded to right injustice and remove those who were corrupt. Those whom he removed and rebuked he also kicked out of the city and when they were lying by the gates hoping to do some business with anyone who ventured near, Nehemiah kicked them away from the gates as well.
Reformation is only the start, preservation is what helps you finish. People that make a difference are people who are unmoved by sin. They are people who do not entertain even a small portion of the enemy in their lives. The devil must flee at the name of Jesus, but will only flee as far as he has to. Do not tolerate evil! Do not entertain its ways! Do not allow it to hang around. Like a boxing match, some fighters win because their opponent allowed them to hang around when they should have put him to the mat.
Today, strict adherence to the Word of God is the only protection we have against the enemies cunning devises. 5 times Paul said to Timothy and Titus that sound doctrine is the primary weapon against falsehood. So listen to the teachings here and be blessed and fortified and strengthened because we are going to need it.
