Ruth
The book of Ruth is a story of redemption. In fact, it can be said that Ruth is a microcosm of the gospel message itself. Ruth takes place at time during one of Israel's worst drought's. It was written in what is called "a time of the Judges". It is uncertain the exact age of the book but we do know that Israel was in the middle of one of their turning away periods. Israel had a long history of falling away from God especially during trying times. It was during these times that they would often turn to idols and partner with surrounding countries who were enemies of Israel.
Amidst all this, there was a storyline taking place that would ultimately unite gentiles and Jews through Christ himself. The story begins with a married couple named Elimelech and Naomi. As the famine worsened, the couple sought refuge in Moab. It is always a mistake to seek refuge outside of the will of God. This one act describes many of us who seek alternate solutions to the problems we face in the day to day of life. God is always seeking our best interest and when we face trials and troubles they are designed to help us grow into the image of His Son, Jesus.
The couple had 2 sons who married Moabite women. One of those women was named Ruth. After Naomi's husband and two sons died, she decided to go back to Israel. One daughter-in-law stayed behind in Moab. The other, Ruth, went back with the elderly Naomi to help her along and to care for her.
Upon their return to Israel, Ruth went straight to work gleaning in a field that was owned by a man named Boaz. Boaz fell in love with Ruth and wanted to marry her and take care of her. The only problem was there was someone else who had first dibs on Ruth. The reason? In Jewish law, if a man dies, the widow is to be taken care of by the next of kin brother. In this case, there was another who had first rights to marry Ruth. This person was known as the "Kinsman Redeemer".
When all the dust settled it was Boaz who ended up marrying Ruth and even though there was another who was the rightful kinsman redeemer, the sovereignty and divinity of God's will triumphed.
In a fallen world with a fallen flesh there is one who has the rightful ownership of everyone who is born. The ruler of this world system has "first dibs" on the souls of every person born. While he may have first rights, there is a righteous Kinsman Redeemer who supersedes every and all rights of the prince of the power of the air; Satan. Jesus will one day return and take his role as the king of the world but until then the enemy of truth prowls around with a false sense of power. Jesus has paved the way so that every single person has the ability to change ownership and become sons and daughters of God through the shed blood of Christ.
