nahum
The prophet Nahum is consider a minor prophet, but packs a major punch. Stuck in the middling pages of the Bible is a seemingly obscure prophet with a message that has nothing to do with Christians or Israel...or so it would seem.
True, Nahum's prophecy is not about Israel directly, but affects them in a big way. Nahum has been commissioned by God to foretell the destruction and fall of Nineveh, more specifically, the entire Assyrian empire. Their destruction would be Israel's and Judah's redemption (Nahum 2:1-2).
Nineveh's biblical notoriety stems from the ever popular kids story "Jonah and the whale". 100 years prior to Nahum's message, another obscure prophet came to Nineveh to preach repentance lest God destroy them for their iniquities.
Nineveh did indeed repent and God spared them from the wrath they so deserved. 100 years later, they are more evil than they ever were in the past. This time, there is no more mercy emanating from the Throne and judgment has been pronounced via Nahum.
Nineveh was the capital city of the Assyrian empire. To date, the Assyrian empire was the most brutal people to ever walk the planet. The atrocities committed to neighboring countries, Israel included, was paramount to their proclaimed demise.
If there is a lesson that we the church could learn from this tiny book (and there are many), it would be that repentance, forgiveness, grace, and mercy are precious gifts of the Almighty and should be held in high esteem for the value that they are. To show contempt for the compassion of God is a sin that, though some would argue, one that you cannot come back from. Hebrews 6:4-6 and Nahum provide a solid case for the importance of continuing to "work out our own salvation" (Philippians 2:12) lest we crucify the Son of God all over again.
Be blessed and enjoy the verse-by-verse teaching of the book of Nahum.
