genesis chapter 1
Genesis Chapter 1
The word genesis in Hebrew means beginning. Authored most likely by Moses, it is the first of five books known as Pentateuch (pen-tuh-took,) or Torah. God often reminded His people that it was Moses to whom He gave the awesome responsibility of sharing His law.
Deuteronomy 31:9
So Moses wrote down this law and gave it to the priests….
Malachi 4:4
"Remember the law of my servant Moses, the decrees and laws I gave him at Horeb for all Israel.
Mark 12:19...
Moses wrote…
The words of God were passed down through generational oral teachings. I am of the belief that most of the solidification of God law to Moses/Israelites probably came during the 40 years of wandering in the desert.
In fact, if you are starting off your new year in a bit of a desert season, perhaps God is trying to solidify some of His truth into your life.
Genesis 1:1-3
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. 3 And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.
Notice the allusion to the trinity in first 3 verses. God begins the most treasured book of all time with a reference to what would one day be the foundation of salvation for all.
Now I have two questions (perhaps you have the same ones). The Bible starts off “In the beginning God…” If God created the Earth in the beginning then…
Question #1 --“Where did God come from?”
Answer: I don’t know!
Some things are unexplainable. We do not have to understand everything about God. Sometimes we just have to accept things. (by the way, that is the very essence of faith).
God created…you cannot create something from nothing so in order for something to come out of nothing, there must be something first. God always was. So back to question #1…“where did God come from?” Answer: I don’t know.
Question #2 --“How does the one true God become the three person trinity?”
Answer: I don’t know. Good bible “teaching” so far huh?
He did not create the Holy Spirit. He did not create Jesus. They were always with him. The best way to comprehend it is to think of water. Water can be ice, vapor or liquid. Same body of matter in three forms.
God created something (“formless and empty”) and the Spirit of God had charge over it. The Holy Spirit waited for the next order of things. That next order was Light.
Once light came into existence there was a line drawn in the sands of eternity. Look at…
Verse 4
God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.
From the very beginning of time light and darkness had no fellowship with each other and they never will.
Look at…
Verse 5
God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.
We need to realize that there are no gray area’s in Christianity. There is no compromise of black and white; day and night. Something is a sin or it is not! Something is either wrong or it is right! You are either believer in Jesus or you are not. Jesus said you are either for Him or against Him (Matthew 12:30).
We all need to stop trying to fit God into our own personal belief system. We need to stop choosing the parts of the Bible we believe. Listen, either the Bible is all true or not true at all, period. You are either a friend of the world or a friend of God. Jesus put it very succinctly…
Luke 9:62
Jesus replied, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God."
Ephesians 5:8
For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light
======================================================
Lets take a side road on these verses…Lets talk
creation verses evolution.
Major belief systems about God
Verse 1 alone refutes all the major beliefs out there in regards to creation…below you find a brief explanation and refute of the major belief systems. It is laid out as follows, {the belief…what they believe…and how the Bible refutes it.}
a) Atheism--there is no God--Everything was created by God.
b) Pantheism--God is the universe--God is transcendent to his creation.
c) Polytheism--there are multiple gods--One God created all things.
d) Materialism--Matter is the only reality--even matter had a beginning.
e) Dualism--two equal and opposite creators--God was alone when he created the universe.
f) Humanism--we are our own god--God is the ultimate reality.
g) Evolutionism-- everything evolved into something--God created.
And all that is refuted just in verse 1.
======================================================
There are a couple of theories about creation that we must entertain.
Theory #1 “The Gap Theory”
The gap theory claims that there was billions of years between Gen 1:1 and 1:2. During which time the rebellion of Satan occurred and God sort of remade the earth in the literal six days.
This theory allows geologists and scientists to have all the eons they want to explain fossil findings and strata development.
The problem is it also opens the door for evolution which has permeated our society and worse…our schools.
The problem with this theory is that it gives death its origin long before Adam sinned. But this contradicts scripture…
Romans 5:12
Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned
1 Corinthians 15:21
For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man.
Another problem with this theory is the word “and”. All through chapter 1 up to verse 24 we see the word “and”. It denotes that each statement about creation is sequentially and chronologically connected the verse before it…there is simply no room for the gap theory.
======================================================
Theory #2-- “The Day Age Theory”
Suggests that the 6 literal days were symbolic terms for long ages.
Many would like to equate each day as a geological era of creation. Again giving the scientists the millions of years their beliefs demand. But here is the problems with such a theory…
Fossil records chronologically contradict Genesis record. These “ages” are dated by what? Fossil records. Again this denotes death, which we just looked at.
No! These must be literal days because if you wrote genesis and wanted to convey that there were countless eons in-between would you use the word “day” or something else? To properly interpret Genesis 1 is to not “interpret” at all! Days mean days.
Back to text---V. 1 shows God as the source of all things. V. 2 shows that the spirit is the energizer or power of all things. V. 3 shows God’s first spoken word “light” and we know that Jesus is both Light and Word--
John 1:1,14
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us…
This then leads us to the verses 3-5--The separation of light from darkness.
======================================================
Read verses 6-25.
6 And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.” 7 So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. 8 God called the vault “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.
9 And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so. 10 God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” And God saw that it was good.
11 Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. 12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.
14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. 16 God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.
20 And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.” 21 So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing with which the water teems and that moves about in it, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.” 23 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day.
24 And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so. 25 God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.
Read the next few paragraphs carefully
In verses 6-9 God separates the water from the ground, from the water in the sky. This is not just cloud cover; it is an ocean in the sky that literally blocks the deadly UV rays of the sun. Without the cell killing rays of the sun beating down on the earth; people, plants and animals lives hundreds and hundreds of years.
This gives explanation to large fossils found of 6 foot dragonflies and dinosaurs. A dinosaur is just an average lizard that lived for 1000 years or more. Since a reptile never stops growing as long as it is alive, these creatures, and many others, grew to enormous size.
This is why when the flood rain began to fall in Noah’s time, the people did not know what it was for it had never rained prior. The flood was the release of this “ocean” in the sky falling to the earth.
Life on earth was dramatically shortened after the flood because there was no longer that protective canopy in the sky shielding us from the cell killing rays of the sun. Pretty interesting stuff huh?
Also notice that God created everything according to their kind.
1) The plants were created according to their kind V.11
2) The sea and air animals were created according to their kind v.21
3) The land animals according to their kind V. 24
The natural order of creation was that like things be matched with like things.
1 Corinthians 15:38-39
But God gives it a body as he has determined, and to each kind of seed he gives its own body. All flesh is not the same: Men have one kind of flesh; animals have another, birds another and fish another.
Just as each thing had its own flesh, so too, each thing was designed for each other. God is a God of order. I see the foundation of God’s stance on homosexuality here. But more on that in another study…
We will finish chapter 1 in the next study as we look at the creation of Man. We will also see that it was not long that mankind would blow it.
Perhaps you feel like you have “blown it” in your life today. Maybe you already blew your new years resolution. With God it is never too late to turn to Him. No matter how far in the opposite direction of God you have walked, He is always just one step behind you. Just turn around.
Please share these teaching on your timeline if there is anyone that you know might benefit from the instruction of God’s Word.
Be Blessed.
