genesis chapter 2
Genesis Chapter 2 (and some of 1)
We begin where we left off in the last study. Having finished the creation of the earth and animals, God moves on to His crowning achievement.
Consider those words, “crowning achievement”. God has indeed done some truly amazing things but you, you my friend, are the most adored thing that God has ever done. God’s exact words concerning you are, “You are the apple of God’s eye.” (Zechariah 2:8).
Genesis 1:26-27
Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”
So God created mankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.
We often refer to God as a “He.” Of course God is actually a “She.” Well not really. God is actually and “Our”. He is both! She is all! They are everything! God is “our” because, as we saw in the first three verses, He is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. But God is also “He and She”.
You see, in verse 27 God created mankind in His own image, in the image of God He created mankind. Male and female He created them. So, if he created us in His own image, and He created us male and female, then God is of both genders. I guess that means God would shop at Target (too soon?).
Have you ever heard someone tell a man, “Get in touch with your feminine side”. Us guys can feel, cry, nurture, but that is not our main nature (or at least it shouldn’t be). Likewise, women can be stern, strong even powerful (we all have heard stories of a mom lifting up car to save their child) if they have to be. But again, that is not their main nature.
So when we think of “God” creating “man” we must think of a three person, dual gender God, creating a three person (body, soul, spirit), dual gender being.
God created the body of man in his image because one day he would have to reside in that image. When we read the word “image” we must understand that it does not mean being “like God”. That is the humanism/new-age mindset. But rather we are in his likeness. That is.
He can see and hear.
Psalm 94:9
Does he who implanted the ear not hear?
Does he who formed the eye not see?
He can smell.
Genesis 8:21
The LORD smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart…
He can touch.
Genesis 32:25
God touched the socket of Jacob's hip so that his hip was wrenched…
He can speak.
Luke 3:22
and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased."
And not just sensational faculties, but we were created in his likeness with holiness and perfection and righteousness.
Ephesians 4:24
Put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness
And with knowledge.
Colossians 3:10
Put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.
The reason you do not fully attain holiness, perfection, righteousness and knowledge is because we are still being sanctified. But one day we will attain this…
1 John 3:2
2Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears,[a]we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.
So God created a perfect world with perfect people and He gave them this charge…
Genesis 1:28 – 2:3
28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”
29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it--I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.
31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.
2 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.
2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.
Man and animal were created as vegetarians. Does that mean it is a sin to eat meat? No. I may be wrong but P.E.T.A stands for People. Eating. Tasty. Animlas. O.K. maybe not.
If there was no sin and we still lived in garden, then yes eating meat would be a direct violation of God’s command (v.30). But…
***God always made provisions for the sins of man. But never does He condone them.***
Consider the mercy of God as it relates to the sin of man…
a) When Adam failed, in his mercy, He gave meat.
b) When Israel rebelled, in his mercy, He shelved for a time.
c) When men abused marriage, in his mercy, He gave Moses a law on divorce.
d) When the earth was a total mess, in his mercy, He spared Noah.
e) When humans were left desolate, in his mercy, He sent his Son.
Etc, etc, etc.
So today it remains…
1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
God’s mercy for your sin is just a confession away. I repeat…
***God always made provisions for the sins of man. But never does He condone them.***
=======================================================================
Also notice that everything that God had made up the creation of mankind was “good”. Man was the first of His creations to be called “very good”.
Do you know why? Because He loves you. He adores you. He cherishes you. He can not get enough of you. Yes you! Please understand the importance you have in God’s eyes.
Zechariah 2:8
For whoever touches you touches the apple of His [God’s] eye-
The world has stripped people of the knowledge of how much they mean to God. If people would just realize they are the prize possession of God, how much more peace and love there would be.
But instead we have commercials, telling you your too fat, or too ugly, not smart enough. We Have a world full of people who try to build themselves up by tearing others down. Next thing you know there will be pornography on the internet.
You, yes you, are a first class, prize possession. The blue ribbon. The apple of God’s eye. The crown of His creation. Start living like it! Start acting like it! Start believing it!
Be bold, be strong. Be all you can be. Be at peace, be content, and be happy. Be able to look at yourself in mirror. Don’t you know who you are? You’re a child of the King.
Satan and this world can try to tear you down, but if you will focus on your value in the eyes of God, you will walk with the knowledge of your importance to God.
=======================================================================
…So God rested. Does that mean he was tired? No. It was an example for us. Remember what Jesus said…
Mark 2:27
Then he said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath
You should work hard. You should take care of family and home. You should volunteer your time and energy. You should give to others and you should take time for God and have a day a rest and reflection. God did!

Let’s look at the remainder of this chapter…
4 This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, when the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.
5 Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth and no plant had yet sprung up, for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no one to work the ground, 6 but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground. 7 Then the Lord God formed a man[d] from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
8 Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. 9 The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
10 A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters. 11 The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold. 12 (The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin[e] and onyx are also there.)13 The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush.[f] 14 The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Ashur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.
15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”
18 The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”
19 Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals.
But for Adam no suitable helper was found. 21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs[h] and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib[i] he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.
23 The man said,
“This is now bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called ‘woman,’
for she was taken out of man.”
24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.
25 Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.
So there was Adam, put in the garden to work it. Man must continue with some kind of job. We were created to work, to be active; industrious. How often we hear of someone dying soon after they retire?
Now Adam was alone and in need. Loneliness is not good. Some people like to be alone but there is a difference between loneliness and being alone. Perhaps best differentiated by this sentiment…
Language has created the word loneliness to express the pain of being alone,
and the word solitude to express the glory of being alone.
So God created Eve. Woman. What could possibly go wrong? We will look at the fall in the next study. In the meantime, men, let us remember the power woman have over us and the depths of which we can not understand them…Simply put…
In the beginning, God created earth and rested.
Then God created man and rested. Then God created
woman. Since then, neither God nor man has rested.

We are always getting in trouble because we just cant understand each other, Amen? Guys if she forgets our anniversary, for instance, how upset would you be? Yeah, me either.
It reminds me of this anecdote…
A husband got in big trouble after missing his wedding anniversary.
His wife told him the day before: "Tomorrow there better be something in the driveway for me that goes zero to 200 in 2 seconds flat."
The next morning the wife found a small package in the driveway.
She opened it and found a brand new bathroom scale.
Chapter 2 ends with, “They were both naked and not ashamed.” But that will be short lived. Chapter 3 brings the shame. Sin always leads to covering up. We must hide sin. A lie must be concealed. A crime must be hidden. Thank God, no really, Thank God, He provided mercy yet again.
