genesis chapters 4-5
Genesis Chapter 4-5
Start by reading chapter 4:1-16Cain and Abel4 Adam made love to his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, “With the help of the Lord I have brought forth a man.” 2 Later she gave birth to his brother Abel.
Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. 3 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord.4 And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering,5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.
6 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”
8 Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.” While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.
9 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?”
“I don’t know,” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”
10 The Lord said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground. 11 Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12 When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.”
13 Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is more than I can bear.14 Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”
15 But the Lord said to him, “Not so; anyone who kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over.” Then the Lord put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him. 16 So Cain went out from the Lord’s presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
Despite the consequences God doled out in chapter 3, we are going to look at a very comforting attribute of God right here in verse 1 of chapter 4.
The first principle I want you to grasp today and everyday is this...
“With the help of the Lord I…”
Eve had blown it. She knew it and her punishment had the desired effect God intended; it drew her close to him. Anytime God has to discipline you, His child, it is for the sole purpose of drawing you to Him. Sadly, that is not always the case.
When sins consequence is upon you, what you do next is vital to your spiritual growth. Last chapter we saw the blame game. God is not interested in your excuses for your sin, He is interested in your heart. Is it repentant? Is it remorseful? Is it willing to move forward and try harder? Eve showed a heart that was on its way back to God.
She said, “With the help of the Lord I…”
Adam avoided God. Cain? he flat out lied. You see, sin is a progression. Sin always has to outdo itself the next time. Very evident in drug use and lust fulfillment. Always seeking more than the last time.
But that is the physical aspect of sin. Cain committed the physical act of murder but he did not just wake up and decide to kill his brother. It was a progression, even worse it was a matter of heart…
The heart is a scary thing.
Jeremiah 17:9
The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?
This was the problem/difference in Cain and Abel’s offering. It wasn’t that a meat/fat offering was better then a vegetable offering. I believe it was the heart condition that the sacrifice was given in.
Perhaps Cain, in arrogance of the heart, was trying to show God he could still produce fruit in the ground that God had cursed. Sacrifices were intact and God allowed them to approach Him but it had to be in the right manner. V.3
Leviticus 10: 1-3
Aaron's sons Nadab and Abihu took their censers, put fire in them and added incense; and they offered unauthorized fire before the LORD, contrary to his command. So fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed them, and they died before the LORD. Moses then said to Aaron, "This is what the LORD spoke of when he said:
" 'Among those who approach me
I will show myself holy;
in the sight of all the people
I will be honored.' "
Aaron remained silent.
Aaron's sons went before God, but with a bad heart. Jesus has made it possible to go before God once again. So I ask you, how do you do it? Do you look at your watch and say, “I got a few minutes before my appointment”. Or do you set all else aside and offer a heart of purity and faith to him. What you do for God in a heart of purity and in faith can have lasting rewards on earth and in heaven…take a look at this scripture.
Hebrews 11:4
By faith Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain did. By faith he was commended as a righteous man, when God spoke well of his offerings. And by faith he still speaks, even though he is dead.
You can always tell the state of the heart by the reaction of the accused.
I remember a time when I saw Playboy magazine in my 12 year olds search history one day and I still remember the very uncharacteristic manner in which he answered me. His adamant and abrupt denial was also his jury.
In verse 5 we see that Cain was angry at God and Able...
Your reaction to exposed sin is a barometer of your spiritual growth.
We see it in the Israelites (repentant), Saul (anger), King David (repentant), the Prodigal son's brother (anger), one thief vs. other on the cross (anger/repentant), etc.
Perhaps he reacted angrily because Cain still had to rely on Abel’s sheep to approach God. God knew what was coming next in verse 6-7. Anger is the closest emotion to sin.
Ephesians 4:26
In your anger do not sin.
Notice it does not say in your disappointment or sorrow. Jesus said that anger is equal to murder (Matthew 5:21). Unrighteous anger is a cancer. It snowballs just like the fall in the garden, in less than one generation sin already lead to murder, premeditated murder. His obedience to the sin that was crouching at his door made Cain a seed of the devil.
Sin and blood are first mentioned here and should always be mentioned together; always.
First it was expulsion from the garden, then the land would have to be tilled and worked for food, now even the land good for food is taken away from Cain and he is driven from the region.
The more sin that is committed the farther away from God we become until one day we realize we have a callous heart. It crouches, it gets a foothold, we bite the apple as it were, but now what? What do you do now? Do we run to God or run from Him?
This is the world today. It’s hard, callous and untouchable. Like bedrock, sediment of sin has layered upon lives that we can no longer hear the gentle whisper of the Holy Spirit. We no longer feel the touch of the Lord. We are seared and feel not the touch of the Lord.
1 Timothy 4:1-2
The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.
No longer can Living Water seep into their souls. Cain is an example of the typical world-ling. Not revering the Lord, full of deceit, falsehood, murder, denial, self pity and separation from God. He thought more of himself then he should have…here is a cute joke to drive home the point.
Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, and Al Gore were in an airplane
that crashed. They're up in heaven, and God's sitting on the great white
throne. God addresses Al first.
"Al, what do you believe in?"
Al replies, "Well, I believe that the combustion engine
is evil and that we need to save the world from CFCs and that if any more
freon is used, the whole earth will become a greenhouse and we'll all die."
God thinks for a second and says, "Okay, I can live with
that. Come and sit at my left,"
God then addresses Bill Clinton. "Bill, what do you
believe in?"
Bill Clinton replies, "Well, I believe in power to the
people. I think people should be able to make their own choices about
things and that no one should ever be able to tell someone else what to do.
I also believe in feeling people's pain."
God thinks for a second and says, "Okay, that sounds
good. Come and sit at my right."
God then addresses Bill Gates. "Bill Gates, what do you
believe?"
Bill Gates said, "I believe you're in my chair."
Now the good news. No matter how far one wanders from the Lord, God is always just one step behind you. People who do not know God are well aware of their sins.
Knowledge of sin can be present outside of the knowledge of God.
It goes back to that moral sense of right and wrong.
Romans 1:18-20 (NIRV)
18 God shows his anger from heaven. It is against all the godless and evil things people do. They are so evil that they say no to the truth. 19 The truth about God is plain to them. God has made it plain.
20 Ever since the world was created it has been possible to see the qualities of God that are not seen. I'm talking about his eternal power and about the fact that he is God. Those things can be seen in what he has made. So people have no excuse for what they do.
People do not need to be told they are sinners, they need to be told they can be forgiven. That God loves them. That it is not too late to turn to Him. Satan has blinded the world and they believe they have no hope. We are their only hope.

Let’s finish chapter 4
17 Cain made love to his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was then building a city, and he named it after his sonEnoch. 18 To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methushael, and Methushael was the father of Lamech.
19 Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah.20 Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock. 21 His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play stringed instruments and pipes. 22 Zillah also had a son, Tubal-Cain, who forged all kinds of tools out of bronze and iron. Tubal-Cain’s sister was Naamah.
23 Lamech said to his wives,
“Adah and Zillah, listen to me;
wives of Lamech, hear my words.
I have killed a man for wounding me,
a young man for injuring me.
24 If Cain is avenged seven times,
then Lamech seventy-seven times.”
25 Adam made love to his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, saying, “God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.” 26 Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh.
At that time people began to call on the name of the Lord.
Cain’s attempt at a city (however small it was) was his way, in his power to reverse what God had already said.
Cain perhaps was trying to defy God by showing that he would not be a wanderer as God said he would, just as he was trying to show God that even a cursed ground could produce an offering fit for the creator.
We as humans, are always trying to distort, reverse, override, loophole and flat out deny what God has already said to be truth. Sin begins when we either question God’s Word or his goodness or both. Cain’s defiance was passed on to his offspring for generations, while Eve’s submission was seen in Abel’s line.
So Cain has some kids and Lamech, in particular, was purely evil. Look at verse 19. Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah.
This would be the first recorded event of polygamy and he set himself above God...23 Lamech said to his wives,
“Adah and Zillah, listen to me;
wives of Lamech, hear my words.
I have killed a man for wounding me,
a young man for injuring me.
24 If Cain is avenged seven times,
then Lamech seventy-seven times.”
He gave himself a vengeance against anyone who killed him that was many many many times over what God had given to Cain. He was proud and self reliant, typical characteristics of the line of evil Cain.
Since the beginning there have been 2 seeds, two lines if you will. The seed of the evil one and the seed of the woman. Though both from Eve, and internally wicked because of original sin, the line of Cain birthed a wicked line, while the line of Abel brought righteousness and faith as demonstrated in his sacrifice. Abel believed God and obeyed God and like Abraham, righteousness was imputed upon him. In fact, Abraham would come from this line.
Before we read chapter 5 understand this…
What you do in this life, good or bad, affects those whom you love.

Read chapter 5---(yes its kinda boring, I know)
From Adam to Noah5 This is the written account of Adam’s family line.
When God created mankind, he made them in the likeness of God. 2 He created them male and female and blessed them. And he named them “Mankind” when they were created.
3 When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image; and he named him Seth. 4 After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 5 Altogether, Adam lived a total of 930 years, and then he died.
6 When Seth had lived 105 years, he became the father of Enosh.7 After he became the father of Enosh, Seth lived 807 years and had other sons and daughters. 8 Altogether, Seth lived a total of 912 years, and then he died.
9 When Enosh had lived 90 years, he became the father of Kenan.10 After he became the father of Kenan, Enosh lived 815 years and had other sons and daughters. 11 Altogether, Enosh lived a total of 905 years, and then he died.
12 When Kenan had lived 70 years, he became the father of Mahalalel.13 After he became the father of Mahalalel, Kenan lived 840 years and had other sons and daughters. 14 Altogether, Kenan lived a total of 910 years, and then he died.
15 When Mahalalel had lived 65 years, he became the father of Jared.16 After he became the father of Jared, Mahalalel lived 830 years and had other sons and daughters. 17 Altogether, Mahalalel lived a total of 895 years, and then he died.
18 When Jared had lived 162 years, he became the father of Enoch.19 After he became the father of Enoch, Jared lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 20 Altogether, Jared lived a total of 962 years, and then he died.
21 When Enoch had lived 65 years, he became the father of Methuselah.22 After he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked faithfully with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters. 23 Altogether, Enoch lived a total of 365 years. 24 Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.
25 When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he became the father of Lamech. 26 After he became the father of Lamech, Methuselah lived 782 years and had other sons and daughters. 27 Altogether, Methuselah lived a total of 969 years, and then he died.
28 When Lamech had lived 182 years, he had a son. 29 He named him Noah[c] and said, “He will comfort us in the labor and painful toil of our hands caused by the ground the Lord has cursed.” 30 After Noah was born, Lamech lived 595 years and had other sons and daughters.31 Altogether, Lamech lived a total of 777 years, and then he died.
32 After Noah was 500 years old, he became the father of Shem, Ham and Japheth.
The line of Abel was far different then the line of Cain as we will see in more detail. Note the difference between verse 2 and 3. Mankind was made in God’s image while Adam’s sons were in Adam’s [“his”] likeness. This is the meaning of original sin that we are all born with.
So a list is given. A generational list from the line from Adam. Probably not all the generations. This is how knowledge and history was passed down. Direct generational verbal teachings to birth of Noah and his sons.
Look at verse 18. (Not to be confused with the Enoch of 4:17.)
The seventh from Adam in Cain’s genealogy is a far cry from the seventh in Abel’s genealogy. Let’s look at Enoch for a minute.
Enoch was unique—in verse 22 it says he “walked” with God…then died. Everyone else merely “lived” X amount of years then died. Enoch means “dedication”. He was a man dedicated to the Lord.
At this point hundreds of years have passed since creation and it has been estimated that at the time of the flood perhaps several billion people existed. God did not wipe out a world of a few hundred people doing wickedness.
Enoch came and preached righteousness to a depraved world. He came on the scene at about the midway point between Adam and Abraham and he was taken up to heaven without dying. There was one other who was like Enoch; his name was Elijah.
Elijah, another prophet, came and preached righteousness to a depraved world as well. He came on the scene about midway between Abraham and Christ, and was taken up to heaven without dying.
The same holds true for the Christian.
You see we are not yet 6 chapters into the Bible and we have already seen…
Obey God and leave the results of that obedience to Him.
Be Blessed.

This was the problem/difference in Cain and Abel’s offering. It wasn’t that a meat/fat offering was better then a vegetable offering. I believe it was the heart condition that the sacrifice was given in.
Perhaps Cain, in arrogance of the heart, was trying to show God he could still produce fruit in the ground that God had cursed. Sacrifices were intact and God allowed them to approach Him but it had to be in the right manner. V.3
Leviticus 10: 1-3

- You preach righteousness to a depraved world.
- You are on the scene between Jesus’ coming and His return.
- You will be taken up to heaven without dying should the Lord return today.
You see we are not yet 6 chapters into the Bible and we have already seen…
- Creation
- Temptation
- Choice
- Failure
- Consequence
- A savior
- An enemy
- Grace
- Forgiveness
- Rebellion
- Murder
- Redemption
- Hope
- Rapture
- Eternal life
Obey God and leave the results of that obedience to Him.
Be Blessed.
